he Screenwriting Lab is a program of Outfest Forward, which is supported by the Chateau Marmont, Comcast NBCUniversal, and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

This year’s Outfest Screenwriting Lab projects include: a coming of age story set to the music of Gloria Estefan, a dramedy of two women building their family through the foster care system, a story of acceptance between a mother and a daughter, a family drama set in the Bronx, and a buddy-comedy between a barista and a pop star. “The Outfest Forward team is excited to celebrate its 20th year, with such a talented and diverse group of storytellers. Each writer brings a unique perspective to LGBT cinema, which we cannot wait to guide with our team of high caliber industry executives and creatives,” said Outfest Filmmaker Education Manager Jessica Broutt

What began as a screenwriting competition 20 years ago, has expanded to a dynamic three-day, mentor-led workshop sponsored and held in June at the Chateau Marmont for selected screenwriters, followed by a public reading of their work during the 2017 Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival. The Screenwriting Lab will also include sessions with other industry professionals, structured career development opportunities, and participation in ongoing festival events. This year’s mentors are Sydney Freeland (Drunktown’s Finest), Soumya Sundaresh (Paranoia), Cora Olson (Good Dick), David Sigurani (Magic Funhouse!) , and Barry Sandler (Making Love), along with special guests Guinevere Turner (American Psycho), Chuck Hayward (Dear White People, Fat Camp), Amotz Zakai (Agent, Echo Lake Entertainment ) and former Outfest Screenwriting Lab Alums, Javier Fuentes Leon (Undertow) and Doug Spearman (Hot Guys With Guns).

Through the past 20 years, the Lab has shepherded 100 scripts through its three-day mentorship program where the next generation of screenwriters are teamed with industry professionals. The scripts from the lab have been: Opening and Closing Night Gala films at Outfest Los Angeles, nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, premiered at Sundance, and one has even been selected as Peru’s official submission for the Academy Awards.
This year’s six fellows will have a scene from their scripts performed at a Live Staged Reading, on Tuesday, July 11th at the Directors Guild of America, during the Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival.
